Grunert Replacement, final

After we gutted everything we placed an order and waited for parts. They had the parts for a partial, but I decided to just wait for everything.

Once we got a shipping confirmation we started preparing everything. Stripping the remaining wiring, cleaning up the freezer woodwork, and final testing everything.

Assisted by my wife, we took measurements then heated the freezer evaporator with a heat gun. Once hot, we wrapped a PVC pipe in a towel and made our first bend.

After test fitting we nailed our second bend and installed the evaporator as hign in the box as possible, to allow the cold sir to flow down.

I used a hole for the thermostat bulb mount to also mount the thermostat in the box out of the way. Tubing was neatly run through the existing hole in the box, and into the engine room.

We did the same for the larger frig evaporator. It should easily take the frig to zero. The evaporator plate runs across the top of the box, down the back, then onto the frig bottom. I will find a stainless steel grate for the bottom instead of the traditional teak grate.

Once installed we started pulling power from the 12vdc panel, across the engine room, and joining the freezer piping. All this flows across the engine room ceiling to the frig piping, and is neatly run to the compressors. We had to run 2) 10 gauge power and 2) 16 gauge thermostat wires along with two tubes from each evaporator. All had to be neatly bundles perfectly.

Once in the lazarette the line was just long enough that we could cleanly make the runs and terminate the wiring. After cleaning everything up we hot wired the system to see how it worked.

Both units came on and almost immediately we could feel the evaporators getting cold.

I am waiting on gaskets for the freezer hatch and a paint match to touch up paint the freezer top and interior panels.

Update:

With new airtight gaskets and Mercury thermometers we set the frig at 36, and have had the freezer down to -16! Currently at 6.

Unit is so quiet you have to touch compressor to confirm it is running.

Best upgrade to the boat.
